Thai General Insurance Association was established on March 6, 1967 in the first name of "The General Insurance Association" by the merger of three trade associations which include an Association of Europe insurance companies in Thailand that based on the Association of the parent companies in the United Kingdom, the Chinese Insurance Association of Thailand and the Association of Insurers of Thailand. Mr. Vai Vatthanakul is the first president of the Association.
In 2012, the Board of directors of the Association for the year 2011-2013 has considered changing the Association's name to be clear and accommodate entry into the international arena. Because the Association's name in the English language used by "The General Insurance Association" does not communicate that it is a Non-life Insurance Association in Thailand, and Thailand will have to enter the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015. On September 25, 2012 the new Association's name has approved by the member companies of the Extraordinary General Meeting No. 1/2012.
The name of "Thai General Insurance Association" has effective from October 17, 2012 onward.
Currently, Thai General Insurance Association has a total of 57 member companies that are licensed to operate non-life insurance business.
